Mia and Mateo first met on a plane travelling from London to Vancouver. Mia was returning home after visiting her extended family abroad. Mateo was moving from London to Vancouver to pursue a career in film, which had been a life-long dream of his. In the confusion and shuffle of boarding, Mia accidentally sat in Mateo's seat. The two argued over seat numbers and common courtesies until eventually, a stewardess intervened to resolve the dispute. Both Mia and Mateo brushed each other off and settled in for the flight.
An hour into the flight, Mateo noticed that Mia was watching his favourite film, Humphrey Bogart's Maltese Falcon. They quickly got to talking about their favourite directors and after safely landing, the two exchanged numbers and Mia promised to show Mateo around the city.
An unlikely friendship turned into a deeper connection. The two spent hours at Jericho Beach, breathing in the ocean and discussing their plans for the future. Any spare moment was spent with each other, and each night they found themselves blissfully wrapped up in one another.
Despite the couple's best efforts to slow the movement of time, six months quickly passed and Mateo’s visa soon expired. Unable to find steady work, he had no choice but to return to London. With a tearful goodbye, Mateo and Mia parted ways. As the old saying goes, "timing is everything," and sadly, that adage rang painfully true for Mateo and Mia. Their relationship didn’t stand a chance against the pressures of reality.
Sometimes love is preserved as an era in one's life or as a fleeting moment in time. For Mia and Mateo, their love is sustained in a collection of memories that started with an unlikely beginning.
